Source: www.indonesia.travel

Many scientists describe Raja Ampat as the most abundant marine life on the planet. No matter where you look, the biodiversity is amazing, rare, and underwater creatures are unique. In recent years, many new species have been discovered in this archipelago.

Raja Ampat is like a paradise for underwater photography, with magnificent hard and soft corals, clear waters, and abundant coral reef organisms. These islands have a very rich macro life, with almost all types of small animals you dream of!

Raja Ampat is also very suitable for large-scale fish activities. There are pelagic fish everywhere, such as giant horse mackerel or dogtooth tuna. You can also see many sharks, mainly blacktip reef sharks, and whitetip reef sharks, as well as the weird-shaped Wobbegong sharks.

Stingrays are also very common, and there are many amazing dive sites, such as Manta Ridge and Manta Sandy, where they can be found. Very rare dugongs have also been seen many times. From the boat, you will often see dolphins frolicking or skimming whales.

How to dive Raja Ampat?

Liveaboard or diving resort?

Raja Ampat has more than 1,500 islands! With a liveaboard, you can visit many islands and explore the impressive Wayag Island in the northern part of the archipelago. In addition, you can also visit several World War II shipwrecks, such as the magnificent P-47D Thunderbolt located near Wai Island.

Liveaboard is more expensive than Papua Diving’s Kri Eco Resort. The best diving is actually in the central part of Raja Ampat. Most liveaboards will go to the dive sites around Soliduo Bay Resort and Kerry Eco Resort, at least at the beginning of the cruise.

For the resort, you can choose:

  • Kri Eco Resort
  • Soliduo Bay Resort
  • Misool Eco Resort
  • Raja Ampat Diving Lodge

There are also homestays on some islands in the southern part of the archipelago.

The best time to dive in Raja Ampat

Diving in Raja Ampat is excellent all year round. However, since few divers make it to this remote area, there is no “high season”.

It has a tropical climate with hot and humid air. The weather is sunny all year round, with some rainy days. There is more rainfall from May to September than in other months, but it is not a major problem.

Diving conditions

Conditions are usually very good. The water temperature is around 28 ℃ all year round.

Visibility is not great, but you can expect between 10 and 30 meters depending on the dive site.

Current varies from not at all to very strong depending on location. As a result, many dives are adrift, like Passage, which is spectacular when the current is fierce. The depth ranges from 10m to 40m. Most of the diving is easy, but due to the island’s remoteness, this destination is more suitable for experienced divers.

Raja Ampat Snorkeling

Raja Ampat has many magnificent shallow coral gardens that offer excellent snorkeling opportunities. For example, in front of Kerry Eco Resort and Soliduo Bay Resort, there is an amazing coral reef to explore, where you can find excellent corals, sea turtles, and juvenile blacktip reef sharks.

Diving Safety

Suppose you are planning an upcoming diving trip or Raja Ampat, it is good to invest in travel insurance for diving because you never know what will happen and when you will need it, just in case. It is very recommended for you to have this dive insurance in advance because it provides global coverage and focuses on providing quality insurance and medical assistance services for divers.

As most of Raja Ampat is still unexplored, the number of dive sites is still unknown. The most famous dive sites are:

  • Manta Ridge
  • Cape Kri
  • Manta Sandy
  • Cross Wreck
  • Fabiacet
  • Farland Island
  • Jef Fam Group
  • Kaleidoscope
  • The passage
  • Mike’s Point
  • Melissa Point
  • Sel Pele Bay
